“I’m Pregnant!"

Finding out your pregnant is just the beginning…

Those two pink lines are just the beginning of a new chapter you're about to embark on. The fluttering feeling in your stomach, the disbelief that its happening and the mix of emotions so complex it could power a nuclear reactor. Finding out you're pregnant is monumental, but let's be honest, a little overwhelming too. But don't worry mama, you're not alone in this. Here's your roadmap for navigating the first trimester with a little heads up with what you should be looking forward to.

  • Share your news with someone you trust

A partner, friend, family member, informing someone will help ground you after all the emotions you’ve probably just experienced finding out about the pregnancy. Speak about how you feel but also what the next steps will look like for you

  • Start taking folic acid or pregnancy multivitamins

It’s recommended that you take 400mg of folic acid during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and then may recommend you continue taking it throughout the rest of your pregnancy. Whether it's been prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter, read the instructions of how and when to take it and make sure you inform your healthcare provider at your first appointment.

  • Inform your healthcare provider

Schedule your first appointment with your doctor or midwife as soon as you can. This is crucial for establishing antenatal care for yourself and your baby, which is the key to a healthy pregnancy. They'll be able to book you in for blood tests and your first scan to confirm the pregnancy. You’ll discuss your medical history as well as the paternal father's medical history and guide you through the next steps. You can also establish which hospital you’d like to be looked after by with your doctor and they can refer you. Some hospitals also accept self-referral forms which can be completed online (depending on your preference).

  • Download a pregnancy tracking app

Track symptoms, milestones, and dates. Put in the details of when your last period is and see how far along you may be before your first scan (it will be a rough estimate as your due date is confirmed at your scan). There you can see how big your baby may be as compared to a size of a fruit and track how you're feeling during your pregnancy. It's a chance to feel a little more connected to your body and baby.

  • Food is Fuel

Pregnancy opens you up to becoming your very own nutritionist. There are foods that you’ll have to take a break from during your pregnancy and foods you may want to increase consumption of. Food is very important as you will need to learn how to nourish your body with a balanced diet rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein (indulge in whatever you like within reasonable limits also). Don't forget stay hydrated and keep your water bottle with you during the day! Your growing baby needs it all. Click link to find out what are the do’s and don'ts are for diet.

  • Listen to Your Body

If you're tired, prioritise rest. Feeling nauseous? Ginger is about to be your new best friend. Craving weird things? Go for it! Your body is working overtime, so prioritize rest and listen to its cues. The first trimester is usually where the most hormonal changes are occurring so ensuring you are doing what your body needs and ease off pushing your limit will be of great benefit to the overall health of you and baby. Take care of yourself.

  • Build your support system

Pregnancy is not a solo mission. Go to the antenatal classes with your partner or friend and learn a thing or two about yourself and what is happening in your body. Join a prenatal yoga class, connect with other moms-to-be online or at groups. Don't be afraid to seek professional help if you're struggling emotionally. Building your support system is essential for a happy and healthy pregnancy. Get ready to learn about yourself and be open to new things.

  • You’ve Got This!

Pregnancy is such a magical journey with lots of ups and downs. But you are strong, capable, and fiercely loved. Trust your instincts, listen to your body, embrace the journey, and above all, celebrate the miracle growing inside you. Mumfidence Tips:

  • Invest in comfy clothes.

  • Start a pregnancy journal to document your journey. Take photos record yourself or create a written journal. Whatever it is, have something to look back on.
